A downward spiral for the Manics began in December 1993 with the death from cancer of their
co-manager, publicist and close friend Philip Hall. Richey's predilection for self-mutilation was
getting out of control as well: at one gig in Thailand, he appeared on stage with his chest slashed by
knives given to him by a fan. Back home, alcoholic and anorexic, he reached a dangerous level of
depression, and spent several weeks recovering at a private clinic. The remaining Manics played
several high-profile live performances as best they could.
